Extra high resolution digital colposcopy with extended depth of field.

Welcome! I am Dr. Serhiy Pustovarov and I am working on method of digital colposcopy for the last 13 years. This page summarizes my experience in terms of equipment and methodology.

Objective – creation of a technique that allows to turn a colposcopy as a subjective method into an objective diagnostic method. The method and device should be created to produce very high resolution images and extended depth of field. This will allow to splits the process of colposcopy and the process of diagnosis and to involve more professionals and experts in complex situations/cases and to use the technique in automatic computer diagnostics.

Results – research was conducted using two extra high resolution digital colposcope devices arranged in private gynecological clinics.
There were more than 200 colposcopies performed. These studies have shown high efficiency of this approach. The main difficulties were related to the technical arrangement of the device and training doctors how to use the new equipment. It was found that to produce images using this technique, it is desirable to have a base stand for colposcope with 6 degrees of freedom.

Technique – it was determined that the best approach is to create 4 photocolposcopic images for each patient examination: plain, after acetic acid application, after Lugol solution application, after reapplication of acetic acid. Resolution of images is 36mpixels.

Conclusions – the device and method allow to carry out diagnostics of cervical pathology on site, remote diagnostics, to assess the dynamics of pathological changes, produce high-quality images of various cervical pathologies that can be used by physicians including for educational purposes or for teaching automatic computer diagnostic systems. Automatic diagnostic system can recommend areas for biopsy. Device lets to create “Cervical digital passport” for each surveyed woman.
